
Keeping Your Bathroom Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared lamp in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about every surface. You can’t just grab a random heater off the shelf and hope for the best. To get that IP66 rating—which basically means it can handle a direct blast of water—we have to obsess over two things: sealing the box and keeping the electricity far away from everything else.
The battle against moisture
Here’s the thing about bathrooms: moisture finds a way into everything. If steam sneaks into the terminal box and hits a live contact, you’re looking at a short circuit or a ground fault. Not a great way to start your morning. To stop that, we use hermetically sealed gaskets and specific cable glands to lock the water out. We also wrap the heating element in high-dielectric materials. The quartz envelope sits in a heat-resistant bracket that doesn’t conduct electricity. This keeps the outer chassis from becoming “live” and giving you a shock. We build this so the leakage current stays way below what would trip your GFCI.
The heat trap
But there’s a catch. When you seal a box tight enough to keep water out, you’re also trapping the heat inside. If you cram a high-wattage lamp into a tiny, airtight box, the internals will basically cook themselves. It’s a balancing act. We have to size the housing just right so the air inside has room to expand, or use materials that can handle being hot for hours on end without melting.
Getting the wiring right
When it comes to the actual install, don’t cheap out on the cables. Standard PVC jackets tend to crack and degrade when they’re constantly hit with that heat-humidity cycle. Go with silicone-insulated wires. They hold up much better. And please, make sure the ground wire is bonded directly to the metal chassis. That way, if a seal ever fails and water hits the element, the breaker trips instantly. It’s the difference between a flipped switch and the entire heater shell becoming electrified.
