
Giving Your Old PET Blow Molding Machine a Second Life
If you’re running a small or mid-sized brand, you probably have a blow molding machine that’s seen better days. It works, but it’s slow. It just can’t keep up with the pace you need. Now, your first instinct might be to drop a huge chunk of change on a brand-new machine. But honestly? You probably don’t have to. Often, the secret is just swapping out your old heating elements for updated infrared (IR) lamps. It’s a simple tweak that can seriously bump up your output.
The secret is in the heat
Here’s the thing: PET blowing is all about timing. You need the preform to hit that perfect softening point—not a degree too cold, and definitely not burnt. We use short-wave infrared lamps because they punch through the PET wall way faster than the long-wave stuff. When you swap a standard quartz tube for a high-wattage halogen lamp, you’re basically cranking up the heat density. The preform gets hot faster. That means you can speed up your conveyor or just push more bottles through every hour. It’s a win.
The gear side of things
The good news is that this isn’t a nightmare to install. Most of our replacement lamps use R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basically “plug and play.” You won’t have to rip open your control cabinet and rewire the whole thing. We usually pick the tubes based on your voltage—typically 220V or 380V. Going with a higher voltage tube is great because it lets you have a longer heating zone without the heat fading out at the ends. Plus, the quartz glass often has a special coating. It pushes the heat forward into the plastic instead of letting it bleed backward into the machine frame. It keeps the insides of your oven from becoming a furnace.
A quick word of caution
But wait… more heat isn’t always the answer. If you slap 2500W lamps into a machine that was built for 1500W, you’re asking for trouble. You might fry your wiring or keep blowing fuses. You also have to check your cooling fans. If your airflow is weak, you’ll end up with “hot spots” on your bottles. That leads to weird wall thickness or that annoying pearlescent look that ruins a batch. Just make sure your machine’s power capacity can handle the wattage before you flip the switch.
